   итал. режиссёр. Основал в 20-х гг. ж. "Mondo allo schermo", вокруг к-рого объединились молодые кинематографисты, стремившиеся к обновлению итал. кино. Первый ф.- "Солнце" (1929). Б.- один из самых популярных итал. режиссёров 30-х гг. Его творч. поиски отличались непоследовательностью и противоречивостью. Наряду с ф. "Мать - земля" (1931), "1860-й год" (1933), отражавшими тяготение режиссёра к реализму и влияние сов. кино, Б. снимал костюмно-историч. ленты - "Приключение Сальватора Розы" (1940), "Железная корона" (1941) и др. и даже неск. ф., близких фаш. идеологии, - "Старая гвардия" (1934-35), "Альдебаран" (1936), "Никто не возвращается назад" (1943). Переломным моментом в творчестве Б. явилась комедия "Четыре шага в облаках" (1942), показывавшая будничную жизнь простых людей, далёкую от фаш. риторики. Этот ф. был одним из немногих произв., подготовивших почву для неореализма. В 1946 пост. антифаш. ф. "Один день в жизни". В послевоен. период снял много ф. в раз л. жанрах, пре-им. муз. комедий и ревю, а также док. ленты об архит. и историч. памятниках Италии. В 1948 в традиционной для итал. кино манере пост, "боевик" из др.-рим. жизни "Фабиола". Снимался в небольших ролях (в т. ч. сыграл самого себя - режиссёра Б. в ф. "Самая красивая", 1951, реж. Л. Висконти). В комедии "Любовь и сплетни" (сц. Дзаваттини, 1957) высмеял нравы итал. провинц. буржуазии. Из ф. 60-х гг. наиболее значительны его антивоен. ф. "Я люблю, ты любишь" (1961), осн. на док. материале, нек-рые сцены к-рого снимались в СССР, "Лиола" (по Л. Пиранделло, 1963) и "Симон Боливар, освободитель" (1969, в сов. прокате "Симон Боливар"), посвященный освободит, борьбе народов Лат. Америки против исп. господства. Юбилейный приз Мкф в Венеции (1982).
