(р. 3.1.1929, по др. данным, 1921)
   итал. режиссёр. С сер. 40-х гг. работал ассистентом реж. У. Уайлера, Р. Уайза, Ф. Циннемана и др. Писал сц. псевдоисторич. ф. и ф. на мифологич. сюжеты. Как режиссёр завершил съёмки ф. "Последние дни Помпеи" реж. М. Боннара (1959). В 1961 пост. ф. "Колосс Родосский". В 1962 закончил за Р. Олдрича ф. "Содом и Гоморра". Известность получил как "отец" итал. вестерна. Снятый им под псевд. Б. Робертсона ф. "За пригоршню долларов" (1964) имел неожиданно широкий финансовый успех и положил начало целому "направлению" в итал. кино 60-х гг. Все ситуации, трюки, приёмы в ф. Л. "За несколько лишних долларов" (1965), "Хороший, плохой, злой" (1966), "Однажды на Дальнем Западе" (1968) и "Опусти голову" (1971) заимствованы из амер. вестерна, но режиссёр сумел выработать собств. "стиль", нашедший в Италии мн. подражателей,- мрачный, ложно многозначительный, насыщенный жестокостью. Вестерны Л. сделаны на высоком проф. уровне, в них снимались известные итал. актёры под англ. псевдонимами, выразительную музыку к ним писал популярный комп. Э. Морриконе."Спагетти-вестерны", как их прозвали, и их успех - характерное явление бурж. "массовой культуры". В 1984 пост. ф. "Однажды в Америке" (США).
