(1.7.1914 - 1978)
   амер. сценарист. Учился в Калифорнийском ун-те. Преподавал лит-ру, писал рассказы. Дебютировал сц. ф. "Мужчины в её жизни" (1941, в сов. прокате "Балерина"). В 1951 получил пр. "Оскар" (с X. Брауном) за сц. ф. "Место под солнцем" (по роману Т. Драйзера "Американская трагедия"). После сц. детектива "Пять пальцев" (1952) из-за отказа давать показания Комиссии по расследованию антиамер. деятельности У. был занесён в "чёрные списки". Под чужим именем участвовал в создании ф. "Дружеское увещевание" (1956), "Мост через реку Квай" (1957), "Лоуренс Аравийский" (1963). У. был также одним из авторов сц. социальной картины "Соль земли" (1953), пост. группой прогрес. кинематографистов в содружестве с шахтёрским профсоюзом. Написал сц. ф. "Болотный кулик" (1965), "Планета обезьян" (по П. Булю, 1968), "Че!" (1969, о Че Геваре). По произв. У. снят в СССР ф. "Встреча на далёком меридиане" (1977, реж. С С. Тарасов).
