   амер. композитор. Творч. деятельность начал в 1916. Автор музыки к ф. "Люби меня сегодня вечером" (1932), "Голдвин Фоллиз" (1938) и др. Музыка Г., отличающаяся красотой мелодий и ритмич. своеобразием, нередко (основывалась на негритянском фольклоре. Песни из ф. с музыкой Г. получили популярность во мн. странах. Композитор широко использовал совр. жанровые танцы (ф. "Потанцуем?", 1937). После смерти Г. многие его произв. были экранизированы, в т. ч. сюита "Американец в Париже" (дважды - в 1951 и 1958), опера "Порги и Бесс" (1958), оперетты "Леди, будьте добры" (1941), "Безумная": (1943), "Забавная мордашка" (1957). Жизни и деятельности Г. посвящен ф. "Paпсодия в стиле блюз" (1945).
