франц. режиссёр. По образованию музыкант. В кино с 1925. Ставил док., науч.-популяр., к/м фильмы. Первый худож. ф.- "Подтасовка" (1927). Это изысканный по стилю ф. о жизни моряков принёс Г. известность. Его первые: звук. картины "Маленькая Лиза" (1929) и "Метиска Дайна" (1930) свидетельствовали о стремлении режиссёра использовать в кино законы построения муз. произведений. Много лет Г. не мог осуществить пост. ф. на значит. темы. Лишь в 1941 он создал ф. "Буксиры" (по Р. Верселю, сц. Ж. Превер) о героич. труде моряков, спасающих суда, потерпевшие бедствие. Ф. "Летний свет" (1942) и "Небо принадлежит вам" (1943) относятся к числу прогрес. произведений франц. киноиск-ва, созданных в период фаш. оккупации. В 1945 снял док. ф. "6 июня на рассвете" об открытии 2-го фронта в Нормандии. В 1954 пост. ф. "Любовь женщины", в 1955 снял с цв. док. ф. "Дом образов". Неосуществленными остались его замыслы ф. о Парижской Коммуне 1871 и Революции 1848. Был одним из основателей и мн. годы президентом Франц. синематеки; сыграл большую роль в пропаганде прогрес. произв. мирового киноиск-ва.
